Agri Input Market Systems Spotlight Of The Week- FOSTERING BUSINESS EXPANSIONS AND INCREASING FARMERS ACCESS TO QUALITY FERTILIZERS

Agri Input Market Systems Spotlight of the Week- FOSTERING BUSINESS EXPANSIONS AND INCREASING FARMERS ACCESS TO QUALITY FERTILIZERS

The African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnerships (AFAP) is an independent non-profit organization created through a partnership of African development organizations. In collaboration with Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets (FtF IAM) Activity, AFAP has linked 11 hub agro-dealers to suppliers of quality inputs such as YARA, Export Trading Group(ETG), GrainPulse, and Bukola. As a result of the strengthened relationship between MK Farmers, one of the hub agro-dealers in Kapchorwa, and YARA, MK Farmers can now get inputs on credit from Yara. So far, MK Farmers got fertilizer credit worth KSH 9,000,000 (Est UGX 282,330,000) from YARA. This has increased the working capital for MK Farmers which will lead to business expansion and also more farmers will access quality fertilizers. AFAP also continued to build the capacity of UNADA to sustainably provide member-centered services at a cost to increase its revenues. UNADA is currently piloting a demand creation program for Brac Social Business Enterprise products in Kitgum and Amuru which will increase its demand and revenues for UNADA.

FtF IAM partner Agro Supply, a last-mile distributor of quality agro-inputs, trained 15 trainers (8 women) of trainers (TOTs) on fertilizer application. The trainers will support Agro Supply to pass on the knowledge of fertilizer application to smallholder farmers through practical coaching during demonstration gardens training sessions. Agro Supply also continued with demand activation for its improved maize and soybean in the Lango and Mt Elgon subregions through the establishment of 30 demonstration gardens, which are learning sites for smallholder farmers to acquire skills and gain knowledge on fertilizer application and field management (timely pest and disease management and weeding). Agro Supply trained 15 farmers (women = 10, Men = 5) on fertilizer application. This will increase the demand for fertilizers by farmers after observing the performance of the crops thus increasing productivity.

FtF IAM partner Mara, a promotional agro-input distributor introducing new yield-enhancing technologies under the FtF IAM COVID 19 response, sourced 2,500kgs of NPK YARA fertilizers locally from YARA distributor Faith Agro. This was done to timely respond to the demand which was aggregated by coffee advisory agents (CADAs) during farmer profiling. So far five (5) farmers from Sironko and Bulambuli accessed and bought 650kg of NPK fertilizers to boost the growth of their crops.
