Work Pursued in Partnership with IAM
Ortus will leverage a network of partners to increase the domestic production and marketing of rice in Eastern Uganda. It seeks to support farmers in Eastern Uganda to access high-quality seed sustainably, provide loans for all required agro-inputs, and guarantee a market for the rice that is produced through an off-taker agreement arrangement with Zeus Agro, one of the leading rice producers in Uganda. Furthermore, Ortus will incorporate the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT), through digital platforms such as Famunera, a mobile farm inputs marketplace solution that leverages mobile technology to increase smallholder farmers’ access to genuine quality farm inputs; and Hamwe East Africa, an ICT firm that designs solutions to bridge the gap between farmers and the emerging mobile economy by providing agriculture information services, technology services, innovative data collection, mobile payments schedule, and online e-commerce. Through its well-established network of partners, Ortus Africa Capital underpins an array of cross-market functions in a system that can generate broad change throughout the rice value chain.
