VALUE ADDITION AND QUALITY FOOD TRADE

On Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25, 2023, the Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets (FtF IAM) Activity in collaboration with the Uganda Meat Cooperative Union (UMPCU) conducted two validation workshops for the meat sector-wide study in Mbale and Kampala Cities.

The study which Integrated Agriculture Development Services Ltd undertook with facilitation from FtF IAM, revealed opportunities and bottlenecks associated with the meat sector. Over 76 participants from UMPCU membership, district extension workers, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) representatives, livestock breeders, representatives from research institutions, development partners, the National Planning Authority (NPA), slaughterhouse representatives, beef exporters, suppliers of veterinary products, and representatives from the East African Community secretariate attended.

The study findings presented during the workshop prompted participants to agree on utilizing the findings as a precursor for creating meat sector-wide reforms to enhance productivity, competitiveness, and export market access. Moving forward, participants resolved to present the study findings and recommendations to the top leadership of MAAIF, NPA, the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID), and Members of Parliament.
