Value Addition and Quality Food Trade Spotlight of the Week- SUPPORTING MILLS TO IMPROVE THEIR FOOD SAFETY STANDARDS AND ACHIEVING UNBS CERTIFICATION

On 30th May, Feed the Future Uganda Inclusive Agricultural Markets (FtF IAM) Activity began analyzing the results of its Sector-Wide Training (SWT) of fifty (50) agro-processors, starting with southwestern Uganda. This exercise is assessing how the SWT workshops and customized technical assistance has helped mills to improve their food safety standards and the journey towards achieving Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) certification. The Sector-Wide Training (SWT) workshops were conducted by FtF IAM partner Food Safety Associates Limited (FSA) between August and September 2021.  Six (6) processors visited indicated that the training was particularly useful and as result most processors have made investments between UGX 4,000,000 – UGX 500,000,000 in facility upgrading, new equipment and hiring additional staff to enable them implement quality management standards for UNBS certification. In Kasese district, one participant, Ms. Stella Ngategire, Director Amazima Millers, organized 24 other processors in the district who formed and registered Kasese Millers Association with the municipality. Through the association, they invited UNBS officials and received additional training on food safety and quality standards. This collective effort has enabled all 25 association members to undergo inspection by UNBS, and they are now waiting for results of the product samples submitted for testing at UNBS.
